Prognostic Biomarkers in Melanoma
نویسندگان
چکیده
Biomarkers are tumouror host-related factors that correlate with tumour biological behaviour and patient prognosis. Modern analytical techniques have identified numerous possible biomarkers, but their relevance to melanoma progression, clinical outcome and the selection of optimal treatment strategies still needs to be established. In this review, we discuss common predictive biomarkers of melanoma.

Stage-specific prognostic biomarkers in melanoma
The melanoma staging system proposed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) (which classifies melanoma patients into four clinical stages) is currently the most widely used tool for melanoma prognostication, and clinical management decision making by clinicians. However, multiple studies have shown that melanomas within specific AJCC Stages can exhibit varying progression and clinical...
متن کاملPrognostic Impact of Autophagy Biomarkers for Cutaneous Melanoma
Prognosis and survival for malignant melanoma is highly dependent on early diagnosis and treatment. While the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) criterion provides a means of staging melanomas and guiding treatment approaches, it is unable to identify the risk of disease progression of early stage tumors or provide reliable stratification for novel adjuvant therapies. The demand for cred...
متن کاملDiagnostic and Prognostic Biomarkers in Melanoma: Current State of Play
Melanoma is the most deadly skin cancer. The incidence and mortality rates of this tumor have been increasing over the last number of decades. Besides clinical and histopathological characteristics (i.e., anatomic site and subtype of the primary tumor, Breslow thickness, ulceration, vascular invasion, mitotic index), an increasing variety of molecular markers have been identifi ed, providing th...
متن کاملProteomics in Melanoma Biomarker Discovery: Great Potential, Many Obstacles
The present clinical staging of melanoma stratifies patients into heterogeneous groups, resulting in the application of aggressive therapies to large populations, diluting impact and increasing toxicity. To move to a new era of therapeutic decisions based on highly specific tumor profiling, the discovery and validation of new prognostic and predictive biomarkers in melanoma is critical. Genomic...
متن کاملComprehensive DNA methylation study identifies novel progression-related and prognostic markers for cutaneous melanoma
BACKGROUND Cutaneous melanoma is the deadliest skin cancer, with an increasing incidence and mortality rate. Currently, staging of patients with primary melanoma is performed using histological biomarkers such as tumor thickness and ulceration. As disruption of the epigenomic landscape is recognized as a widespread feature inherent in tumor development and progression, we aimed to identify nove...
